“Elemental” - a poem?

Historically I don’t read poetry. Historically I don’t write poetry.

This all began to change a few years ago. I picked up a book of poems from Hafiz, a Sufi mystic. Then a few months ago I got another book of poems this time from a contemporary and this time a female - Morgan Harper Nichols. I’ve been loving ready both. I love their words and I love their imagery. Morgan doesn’t just use poetic words. She writes and plays music, makes visual art, and photographs. I highly recommend both, but even more I recommend you fine poetry that feels accessible for you. I guarantee it’s out there.

So that explains the ready poetry, but the writing. Well, I still don’t, that is until the last few weeks, I have been dabbling now and then in my journaling times. One thing my personality does is ruminate. There are plus sides to this, but it also means my thoughts and emotions can get backlogged and I can feel congested. I’ve even told close friends that I feel constipated - not physically - but creatively. I have stopped the flow somehow.

I working on the doing. I’m working on acting faster, trusting that something else will come. I don’t need to cling to things. I don’t need to strive for perfection. It is much better to participate. So I wrote poetically this morning and decided to share it the same day! Plus, I thought it would be fun to continue to explore what I can do with combining words and imagery. I thought about just sharing it in “print” digitally. In the end, I decided to read it and created a video.

Sorry, no transcript of the poem, as I wrote it longhand, like the analog-digital straddling gal that I am.

Let me know who your favorite poets and what your favorite poems are! I’d love to keep expanding my horizons.

Thanks for reading.

May you see the blessings,

-Elle
