Oh hey, Pandemic...hair
Oh hey there, Pandemic. Still hanging around, huh? Yeah, it's complicated, isn't it?
Well, I thought I'd cut my hair when you were abating. And early this summer things were looking up, people were getting vaccinated, and you were thus more sequestered, like we were. But we opened up, deciding to get out and about and so did you, riding on the tails of the unvaccinated.
Pandemic, you taught me a lot of things. I thought I was done with the learning. I was doing hard work to transition back to the next normal, but you've put that on hold and you seem to chuckle at the willful ignorance of those who deny your power.
I was planning to get my hair cut when you were on your way out, but you're pretty adaptable and capitalized on those un-eager to stomp you out. You have been underestimated by so many outside of the scientific and medical communities and you've broken my heart again and again as you've revealed how we still struggle to care for one another.
These challenges you bring that break us down, give us the opportunity to come back stronger, to love better, to make different decisions.
For some reason in early July it seemed too great a task to get my haircut and less important than I thought it'd be, so I didn't cut it. Now I sense that my hair length journey is far from over, just like my learning.
My hair is a physical reminder of this season and that it's a season. It's not groundhogs day (does that movie end well, I don't recall...).
But hey there, Pandemic, look you've made my hair kind of cute, and more like my 8th grade self with bangs, than my pre-pandemic self. (I'll have to search for an 8th grade photo and pass it on.)
